Maha Shivaratri is the famous Hindu festival which is annually observed in honour of Lord Shiva. The day marks a remembrance of overcoming darkness and ignorance in life and the world. Shiva was married to Parvati on this day. Devotees on Maha Shivaratri observe a strict fast and do various religious activities like fasting, offering prayer on the Shivalinga and doing pujas.Maha Shivratri, commonly known as the great fortnight is one of the most significant festivals in India. It is believed that those who sincerely worship Lord Shiva on this day get freed from all their sins.

Those who worship the Lord with utmost devotion and a clean heart get their all wishes fulfilled. Maha Shivratri falls in the Krishna Paksha on the 13th or 14th day of Phalguna month as per Hindu Calendar.

It is observed by remembering Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty, non-injury to others, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shiva. The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirlingams.
